8 Fr Side Drawer Pollen Trap

Pollen contains the male cell needed by flowering plants for fertilization and seed formation. Flower pollen collects on the legs and bodies of worker bees. It can also include some nectar. Pollen comes from many plants, so the contents of a container of bee pollen can vary significantly depending on the region and month it was collected. Bees can collect as much as 65 lbs. of pollen per year, per hive. The honeybee uses pollen as a protein rich source of food. This trap collects about 2/3 of the pollen loadson bees’ legs. It is best to turn off the trap every 3 weeks so the bees more easily store pollen for themselves.

Trap mounts at the bottom of an 8 frame wooden hive, above the bottom board. Pollen should be taken from the trap daily to prevent growth of small hive beetles in the trap. Freeze your pollen and check it for debris before selling for human consumption.

This bottom, side-drawer version features a board that can be moved up to allow the bees to collect pollen or down to allow the bees to bypass the trap. Using this trap, pollen can be harvested without opening the hive. Use of bottom mounted pollen traps prevents monitoring for Varroa mites using screened bottom boards.
